Admit it. Kickstarter has to be one of the most amazing creations of the web. Helping people fund their ideas. Look at this one. People who wanted to make an adventure game but cannot get it funded.

$400,000 needed. Raised in 8 hours online. And now they even have pledges for over 1,2million.

Have a look at this. Fun, transparent, inclusive. And when 35000 people put $37 dollars on average, big things can come true.

Is there a cure for the Fear of Missing out? How do you catch what's being shared on Twitter, Facebook, seen on Youtube?

Check check check, but sometimes some of us have to work, or have to take a shower, or talk to someone without going through the Twitter feed.

So A young start up created an app for that. It's simple, it's called Rankmill and it gives you the top links/videos shared on your social networks. And what's new also here is that it analyses the people you follow, not the entire Twitter feed.

So you'll see what were the most tweeted links in the last hour, 12h 24h or last week.

And it will also look at your lists. Giving these a completely new life.

And for the marketers around, it can look at specific brands. Right now they've put a few brands to test it like BMW Dior or Pepsi (check the list)

It's easy to use, although only in French but I'm sure if this is a success you'll get an English version, and anyway you'll find you're way through it easily.

Ne ratez plus rien sur vos réseaux, une appli fais votre top of the web #rankmillaacc

Pour bien commencer 2012, je vous offre une cure pour le 'fear of missing out'.

Quoi? Tout simplement un moyen de suivre ce qu'il se dit sur vos réseaux à vous, où ce qui se partage sur les réseaux sociaux sur vos clients.

Une application qu'un start up a développé pour nous à l'AACC et qui est offerte à chacun d'entre vous.

Son principe? Simple. Il vous donne les liens et les videos les plus partagés dans les réseaux sociaux (youtube, twwitter et facebook).

Ainsi cous y verrez les liens les plus twittés dans la derniere heure, 12h, 24h où semaine. Un bon moyen de voir les tendances se créer sous vos yeux.

Mais il permet aussi de le faire pour vos marques. Vous y trouverez certaines marques test. Par exemple vous pourrez voir les liens les plus partagés pour BMW.

Donc les tops des liens partagés par ceux que vous suivez, où m^me pour chacune de vos listes (vous allez commencer à les utiliser!) où vos marques.

N'hésitez pas à la partager à vos équipes où à prendre contact avec Rankmill si vous voulez en savoir plus.

Plus vous suivez de gens, plus vous avez de listes, et plus elle est interessante à utiliser.Pour ma part, je l'utilise depuis une semaine et je vous avoue que je suis très addict.

Quand quelque chose nous manque, il ne reste plus qu'à le faire.

C'est donc ce que j'ai fait avec une start up que j'ai accompagné pour développer une appli iphone pour nous, pour l'AACC et pour tous vos clients.

An independent trader declares how he does not care about the economy because his job is to make money, because Goldman Sachs rules the world, and how much he had been dreaming of a new recession. Well Mr Alessio Rastani. At least you had the balls to say it on TV. But let me tell you this. It's exactly that kind of thinking that took our economies where they are. You selfish ruthless unconscious way of thinking has turned the world upside down with all of us watching.

You might not have noticed it but people's aspirations have changed. And yes while the madness lasts there are now signs that new leaders are emerging, new ways of working. They'er not yet ruling the world, but things go faster than you might be used to.

Veut-on encore rêver?

Voici un film qui réveille l'enfant qui est en nous, car qui n'a jamais regardé enfant avec envie celui qui porte les 4 gallons sur sa manche en prenant l'avion pour la première fois. Un film qui tente de nous faire oublier que de voyager aujourd'hui est aussi attirant que de prendre un bus, que le rêve a été substitué aux queues, aux retards, et aux lounges où la bataille pour la dernière cacahuète est la nouvelle frontière.

Un film qui s'il est beau et bien réalisé semble ceci dit avoir quelques années de retards face aux véritables enjeux du voyage moderne.

Mais un film qui sans aucun doute fera plaisir aux equipes de British Airways.

La question qu'il pose finalement est: veut on encore rêver. Celle que j'ai envie de leur poser est plus: comment allez vous nous rêver demain?

This is a great demonstration on: 'how to recover from a PR disaster'. About a month ago the famous actor Gerard Depardieu was pulled by the police from an airplane for urinating outisde the toilet in an airplane where the stewardess wouldn't let him go to the toilets before take off.

Well he does it again. On video this time. Only it's deliberate, enlists Edouard Baer, and promotes the upcoming Asterix and Obelix movie. This time he can't resist eating before take off.

Lettre ouverte aux talents de demain

Depuis une semaine, le monde des réseaux sociaux commente la recommandation de l'AACC sur l'indemnisation des stagiaires publiée il y a déjà quelques mois.

Fraichement arrivé à la présidence de l'association, je voulais vous apporter une vision personnelle de la question des talents, et vous éclairer sur la manière avec laquelle je vais la mener avec un bureau nommé mardi, notamment avec Jean Paul Brunier (Leo Burnett) à qui j'ai confié cette mission.

Premier regard. Les talents viennent ils forcément des grandes écoles?

Non pas forcément. Ceux qui me connaissent savent que j'applique passionnément une très forte ouverture aux talents quelle que soit leur origine, sexe, nationalité, expérience et éducation.

Pour être précis, sortir d'une grande école où d'une grande université n'est pas une garantie de talent pour les métiers de la communication.

Maintenant penser l'inverse est aussi totalement faux. Il existe dans ces grandes écoles et universités de véritables talents dont notre métier a besoin.

Et ce qui caractérise les métiers de la créativité et de la communication c'est justement une forte diversité et une forte ouverture. C'est de cette richesse que nous puisons notre force.

J'ai appris une chose d'expérience: Le talent se travaille, se démontre, se mérite.

Si chaque agence est libre de faire des recrutements là où il le veut, avec sa politique salariale, et ses choix, voici ce que j'entends pousser pendant les deux ans à venir sur le sujet des talents.

"Renouveler nos talents".

C'est le nom de la mission confiée à Jean Paul Brunier. J'insiste bien sur deux mots: renouveler et talents. Car à travers cette mission la question qui se pose est de comprendre ce que sera le recrutement dans nos agences pour l'avenir. Le digital et la créativité transforment à la fois les désirs des étudiants, mais aussi les besoins de nos entreprises. A nous donc de redéfinir des besoins, des méthodes et des moyens pour l'ensemble de nos agences.

Il est encore tôt, les habitudes ne se changent pas en 24heures. Mais voici quelques unes des idées que nous allons mettre en place. Encore une fois, ce sont des idées, les détails et la pratique pour les mettre en place vont nous demander un peu de temps.

- pour commencer, une concertation sera ouverte avec Jean Paul Brunier et vous mêmes: étudiants, écoles, enseignants. Un groupe sera constitué prochainement.

- si des ponts doivent être crées avec les grandes écoles et universités, nous voulons aussi offrir la chance à d'autres talents n'ayant pas eu la chance où les moyens. Ceci par exemple par un système de 'bourses' et de 'parrainages' que nous allons étudier.

- les enjeux digitaux et de créativité doivent être abordés avec les écoles et instituts de formation. La formation d'hier ne peut être celle d'aujourd'hui.

Mais nous irons plus loin encore; à travers notamment une offre d'incubateurs pour aider à la création d'agence dans des domaines innovants. Une mission menée par Natalie Rastoin (Ogilvy), vous trouverez toujours plus de réalisations que nous offrirons dans chacune des missions du bureau. Stagiaires, sortir de la maladie Française.

Depuis ce matin, ce billet a ouvert un débat de taille: celui des stagiaires. Un débat passionné sur Twitter et Facebook autour d'une recommandation suggérée par le pôle Talent de l'AACC il y a quelques mois. Et que j'assume donc en tant que nouveau Président.

Mais cette polémique est assez normale car finalement derrière le mot stagiaire se pose celui de l'avenir et de la responsabilité de notre métier.

On pourrait penser que j'exagère ici, mais j'insiste. Car le statut de stagiaire n'est qu'un statut temporaire, ne doit être qu'un statut temporaire. Le seul souhaitable est celui de talent embauché. Ces deux mots ayant leur importance.

Les agences cherchant les talents, les meilleurs, ceux qui vont se développer, ceux qui vont apporter une réelle différence à l'agence, s'en nourrir et la faire avancer.

Quand à ceux qui recherchent un travail, diplômés où non, diplômés d'une grande école ou non; la condition de stagiaire ne peut être que temporaire, une passerelle, un tremplin vers un emploi.

Que doit rechercher notre profession? Attirer les meilleurs talents dans un marché qui est concurrentiel au niveau des primes et des salaires. Mais aussi faire en sorte qu'ils aient envie de s'y consacrer.

Deux enjeux donc: s'assurer que les talents viennent vers nous et faire en sorte qu'ils soient traités de façon à avoir une envie irrésistible de s'y consacrer.

Donc talent et emploi.

Alors les talents ne viendraient ils que de certaines écoles, des 'grandes écoles'? Allons nous faire de notre profession un ghetto pour "grandes écoles" ?

Certainement pas. Absolument pas. N'oubliez pas en lisant ces lignes que l'école dont je suis sorti ne m'a jamais valu de prime de stage et ne m'aurait valu dans le cadre présent que le minimum légal.

Alors d'où vient cette idée?

Et bien il ne faut pas nous voiler la face. Depuis des années les entreprises font cette différence afin d'attirer vers elles les personnes ayant passé les obstacles leur permettant d'entrer dans les écoles les plus sélectives.

Sont ils forcément les meilleurs talents? Non, mais il serait fou de se priver d'attirer les talents qui y existent parce que nous ne sommes pas concurrentiels au niveau des indemnités. Et à 417 euros c'était le cas.

N'oubliez pas non plus et ce n'est pas une surprise, que les salaires d'embauche sont très différents suivant les écoles. C'est même un critère qui participe à leur classement. Il serait difficile de ne pas le savoir, ces chiffres et ces classements sont publiés chaque année très officiellement. Et ceci n'est pas purement une exception Française. Les universités Américaines où Anglaise par exemple suivent la même règle.

C'est une règle, une obligation avec des écoles fermées?

C'est une préconisation qui porte sur des stages bien particuliers : ceux de fin d’étude, diplômants, ou d’année de césure

. Mais une préconisation qui demande aux agences de se poser une question: quelles sont les écoles qui drainent pour vous les meilleurs talents, celles avec lesquelles vous voulez lier des liens plus forts? Nous recommandons pour celles ci de porter l'indemnité à 1000 euros dans le cadre des stages où l’étudiant va être en situation de pré-emploi. Il y a donc une première liste. Qui n'est pas une liste d'écoles de commerce mais comprend touts sortes de formations .Créatives et universitaires aussi. Donc une plus grande diversité. A chacun ensuite de la compléter suivant ses désirs.

Pourquoi installer une injustice?

Soyons réalistes. Les différences de salaire sont réalité dans toute agence. Au départ cela va se faire par la sélectivité de l'école, la qualité reconnue de son diplôme. Cela peut aussi se faire par des réalisations exprimant un talent unique (entrepreneuriat, associations, travail personnel artistique, etc).

Et cela continuera tout au long des carrières: les meilleurs talents seront ceux qui progresseront le plus vite. Par exemple une équipe multiprimée à Cannes a plus de chance de voir son salaire augmenter avec les offres d'emplois qu'elle va recevoir qu'une équipe jamais primée, où même une personne avec un savoir faire et une curiosité numérique très forte prend aujourd'hui plus de valeur que quelqu'un qui ne s'y intéresse pas.

Il y a donc deux voies: une qui s'exprime par la sélection en école, qui va amener à un diplôme dans les haut des classements, j'insiste sur le fait que ceci ne veut pas dire écoles de commerce; où sinon une démonstration différente d'un talent personnel. Je sais personnellement celle que je préfère.

Enfin, il y a une autre réalité : tous les stages ne sont pas de même contenu et de même complexité. Il semble peu logique de rémunérer au même niveau un stage de découverte et une contribution active au sein des équipes de l’agence. C’est aussi une forme de bon sens.

C'est quoi cette liste?

C'est un exemple d'écoles depuis lesquelles nous voulons pouvoir attirer des talents. Mais c'est une liste qui a vocation à être adaptée à chaque agence. Mon agence par exemple a rajouté 3 écoles que nous ciblons plus particulièrement. Mais c'est surtout un point de départ. Il veut indiquer que nous encourageons à augmenter les indemnités de stage. Plus que de le prendre comme un encouragement à un élitisme scolaire, il faut le voir comme une porte qui s'ouvre. Et qui peut permettre à ceux qui veulent s'affirmer comme talent de pouvoir toucher plus.

Mais enfin et surtout, regardez le comme l'expression d'une volonté affirmée de ne pas laisser les talents fuir vers des métiers qui eux assument le choix de payer plus les stages des grandes écoles. Pour tous les étudiants c'est en réalité un secret de polichinelle. Par contre vous verrez que notre première liste est bien plus ouverte dans le choix des formations.

Mais ne l'oublions jamais. Le vrai débat est celui de l'emploi. De savoir faire qu'un stage ne soit pas éternel, c'est une maladie Française qui est humiliante pour les étudiants. Un stage est positif quand il offre de goûter à la vie d'une entreprise et qu'il permet d'apprendre à se connaître. C'est là le véritable enjeu.

Pardon de mon franc parler, je suis passé par là aussi, et ça ne s'oublie pas.

Non ce n'était pas le but. Mais finalement plutôt que de voir des fausses listes la voici. Sachez qu'il y aura au Bureau de l'AACC une personne responsable de ce sujet en particulier. Révélation le 5 Juillet.

La nouvelle est tombée aujourd'hui. Dans un eclair d'incompréhension du monde dessiné par le digital, le csa a donc décidé de faire du village gaulois de la TV Française, un lieu où Twitter et Facebook sont désormais proscris. Delectez vous tout d'abord de ce magnifique screenshot, et decouvrez ensuite tout le bien que j'en pense d'une decision qui devrait aider à conjuguer le nom de nos chaines de TV Françaises au passé

Il est donc permis de stimuler les gens Ã parler sur twitter oÃ¹ renvoyer pour une experience plus approfondie vers Facebook (oÃ¹ vice-versa).
Ah non je devrais maintenant dire: vers une platefrome de microblogging et un reseau social. Lesquels? A vous de deviner. Et j'oublie bien sur de mentionner foursquare que je m'empresserai de denoncer dans un email anonyme. Donc pour aider les TV Ã se moderniser, pour stimuler les FranÃ§ais Ã utiliser le digital, nous dÃ©cidons de les mettre dans le flou. Alors qu'au contraire nous aurions besoin de les prendre par la main, de les aider, de les stimuler. Pourquoi?
Tout simplement parceque l'avenir de nos chaines-et donc leurs emplois- depend de leur capacitÃ© Ã se rÃ©inventer, Ã faire progresser un modÃ¨le qui unisse les nouveaux media afin de crÃ©er de nouvelles maniÃ¨res de concevoir la tv: plus interactive, plus ludique, plus active, offrant au telespectateur l'opportunitÃ© de converser, de continuer et d'enrichir son experience. Mais aussi parce que la tv avec sa domination mediatique a un role pedagogique pour les franÃ§ais: elle peut leur apprendre Ã mieux utiliser le digital, le faire sans qu'ils s'en rendent compte mais d'une maniÃ¨re ludique. Ã la faÃ§on d'un jeu d'envergure nationale. Pourquoi vouloir faire Ã§a? Tout simplement parceque ceux qui maitrisent les outils digitaux seront ceux qui pourront mettre la France Ã la pointe du numerique. Parcequ'en apprenant dans leur vie privÃ©e, ils pourront appliquer dans leur vie professionnelle. Quand DSK déshabille le digital.Les 4 lessons à retenir.

Dans le tumulte actuel de l'affaire DSK, il est intéressant de se pencher sur ce qu'elle a révélé de nos nouvelles habitudes, de celles des medias, et donc de ce qui se profile pour les 12 prochains mois de campagne à venir.

Tout d'abord la suprématie des medias du web sur les autres sources d'information. Oui les nouvelles nous sont parvenues un dimanche, et donc nous avons tous eu besoin du web pour nous informer. Mais surtout, l'affaire a été relayée tout d'abord par un tweet, « informé » depuis NY. Très vite et comme le montre ce graphe de l'activité sur Twitter, la nouvelle prend et affole les compteurs. Même chose le lendemain lors du procès, où pour la première fois la mise en accusation a pu être suivie en France depuis la salle d'audience, de nombreux journalistes relayant l’audience en direct sur Twitter. Certains d’entre eux comme ceux de Canal+, n'ayant pas eu le droit de se servir de cet outil web, avaient du coup déjà 20 précieuses minutes de retard lorsqu'ils sont sortis de la salle d'audience pour nous « informer ».

C'est donc non seulement une suprématie des outils web, mais aussi une accélération folle des informations à laquelle nous avons assisté. En 20 minutes, les résultats n'étaient plus chauds mais tièdes, d'où une traque folle pour fournir des détails aux masses d'internautes en recherche de nouveautés : une reconstitution vidéo venue de Taiwan, de (fausses) photos de la femme de chambre, bref une déferlante de soit disant « informations » dont la vérité finalement compte moins que le fait d'exister et de remplacer celles devenues anciennes.

Mais au delà de tout cela, un nouveau comportement est aussi apparu massivement : la possibilité avérée de commenter en live et sur les réseaux sociaux. Sur ma propre page, 80% de mon mur Facebook contenait des commentaires sur l'affaire. A travers DSK, les Français ont découvert leur capacité à commenter massivement et en public un événement. Je ne parle pas de le faire dans les diners en ville, mais d'activement le faire sur le web. Une première, qui donne une résonnance d'autant plus forte et telle qu’elle stimule la recherche d'informations nouvelles, de blagues à transmettre, de dénonciation ou de satisfaction.

La nature des réactions est du coup intéressante à étudier car elle montre ce qui finalement stimule le partage sur internet. Une chose saute aux yeux : les informations négatives ont finalement beaucoup plus de retentissement que les informations positives. Par exemple, le site du Figaro.fr a enregistré le jour de l’arrestation de DSK 40% de visites de plus que le jour de la mort de Ben Laden. 40% ! Très rapidement les tweets les plus relayés sont devenus des jokes plus ou moins gentilles, dès lundi la théorie du complot était validée par le CSA, et les Tweets repartaient de plus belle.

Une série de comportements qui au final peuvent nous donner un premier éclairage sur la manière dont le web se comporte, et se comportera cette année :

1. Des informations courtes et qui se défraichissent très vite, la succession d'annonces étant l'ultime moyen de rester « chaud » et donc d’être « sujet de conversation ».

2. Des informations négatives circulant plus facilement que les positives, nos candidats vont devoir travailler d'arrache pied pour rendre une vision politique attirante, et surtout pour qu'elle soit un sujet de conversation.

3. Des informations qui dans leur forme évoluent d'une annonce, à une vidéo, à un jeu en ligne (si vous ne l'avez pas vue: www.maidcatcher.com ), à des compilations des « best of » quotidiens. Preuve ultime s’il en fallait encore une que le terrain d'expression se déplace sur toutes les plateformes.

4. Un public qui est prêt à relayer une information, à la commenter et donc à s'investir. Le web peut ainsi devenir une arme de destruction massive. Comme il pourrait aussi devenir une arme de construction massive, mis entre de bonnes mains.

Un enjeu donc de responsabilisation de nos hommes politiques et de leurs responsables de communication. Car l'influence telle que nous la connaissons aujourd'hui est utilisée par des apparatchiks jouant pour semer le trouble. Un jeu finalement extrêmement facile, mais aussi une bombe à retardement car l'arroseur se retrouve souvent arrosé.

Si de nouveaux comportements ont été créés, demandons donc à nos responsables politiques d'apprendre à les utiliser efficacement et positivement. L'élection américaine a prouvé que c'est possible.

Et impossible n'est pas Français, si ?

The age of human brands. See what your brand looks like

Sign of the times? With the rediscovery of the human behind the consumer that social media allowed, it's now the turn os our brands to take on a human face. Hardly surprising really: we've all been talking about conversations, and you need a person to talk to. So this site here, based on a huge study worldwide by Millward Brown (the 100 most valuable brands in the world) allows you to visualize your brand. Allows you to start looking at your brand to play with it, like people will. Not a be all end all, but the right point to stimulate discussions, and a very interesting way to get a conversation going, to stimulate thinking.

The idea came from Guy Murphy who won an IPA challenge with this, and has built this site allowing you to access 3000 brands in 23 different market, so enjoy!

A l'occasion du relancement de Polo en France, les équipes de JWT France vous ont concocté une campagne que je n'ai pas voulu me priver de partager.

Pourquoi?

Parce que.

Mais aussi parce que j'aime la renaissance des formats GIF qui après avoir quasiment disparu, retrouvent une nouvelle vie, parce que j'adore une campagne radio qu'on a envie d'écouter, et parce que j'aime quand une idée devient objet.

l'influence politique en ligne: les surprises du premier ranking Peer Index

A un an des élections, nous voici déjà engagé dans une nouvelle campagne présidentielle. Avec une vingtaine de candidats annoncé, il risque d'y avoir du grabuge. Au delà des programmes, les équipes se préparent. Avec une bataille toute spéciale destinée au web, faut il rappeler à quel point il a été crucial dans la dernière élection où il y a 4 ans aux Etats Unis…

Une question m'intriguait ceci dit. De nos hommes politiques, des commentateurs, qui sont ceux qui ont une réelle influence en ligne. Car les conseillers ne pourront rien faire si leur connaissance du web se résume à des supercheries apprises dans des livres démodés avant d'être sortis. La preuve en a été faite dans une émission sur Europe 1 cette semaine qui si elle parvenait à décrypter le passé nageait dans le potage pour se faire une opinion de 2012.

Je me suis donc tourné vers Peer Index pour me faire une opinion. Pour comparer hommes politiques, commentateurs et conseillers. Le résultat va demander beaucoup detravail à nos chers amis politiques. Car si les scores affichés ne sont pas glorieux, il est surtout intéressant de voir à quelle vitesse le Peer Index chute sous la barre des 35 points (sous lauqelle on peut se considérer comme témoin mais non plus acteur). Je passerai le fait que la première place revient à 'humour de droite'. Un site qui sait certainement créer des fideles, mais bon.

Je passerai aussi sous le silence le score de 95 de Al Gore qui est aujourd'hui référence en la matière. Donc, encore 365 jours pour réellement jouer le jeu de l'influence!

Pour ceux qui ont des questions sur le calcul peer index, rendez vous sur le site lui même. Mais rassurez vous il est totalement indépendant.

Quelques jolies surprises dans ces nouveaux chiffres:interaction web et Français

Voici une présentation à ne pas rater pour une vue rapide du web en France.

Il continue à montrer que la television est très loin d'être morte et qu'elle domine notre monde media.
Mais 30% des personnes sont sur le web en même temps qu'ils regardent la television.
On y voit aussi qu'autant de gens lisent le journal en ligne que sur papier.
Que une grande majorité des Français plébicitent la publicité pour accéder à du contenu gratuit.
Qu'ils n'ont pas de problème à ce que la publicité soit ciblée sur leurs besoins. Ca ne semble pas absurde, mais dans ces periodes où la tentattion de réguler est forte, ces chiffres sont une bonne mesure de la réalité des perceptions de Français.
et pour finir l'étude décrypte l'importance des recommendations sur le web (30 ont d'ailleurs donné leur avis)
Sans compter, que l'avis négatif a une importance plus forte sur le comportement que l'avis positif (la première fois que je vois ces chiffres).

Content without a cause. Does Luxury miss an opportunity?

Storytelling. Content. Where a few years back these words seemed futuristic, they are now becoming the norm. Only the issue with a norm is that everyone tends to forget a key question: why?

Because when action becomes dictated by a result (ie: how do we do story telling on our brand, what content do we provide), no one focuses anymore on why you might need that very content, or that storytelling. And if it even has the chance to be the right answer to your question in the first place.

Last week I was interviewed by someone writing a piece on that subject for a luxury brand. The key question asked was how digital could help tell the story of a brand. Being slightly sadistic, I asked two questions back: why were they trying to tell a story, and why the digital obsession. Not that I think any of these is wrong, but because unless we know, we can't give an effective answer.

As the answer proved difficult, I'll give you the result of that conversation: in most cases today it's not about digital anymore, it's about digital fitting in real life. And helping real life.

So we were talking about a big luxury brand. One that had put together a museum to show all that it had in its archives and all it had to show. Only no one really went there, so could digital apply some of it's magic to make more people see the great content on show?

Read between the lines: we have a lot of documents, a lot of heritage. We think it's good to show it and share it. Our board thinks so, and it seems to make sense.

Only…

…no one is interested to see it.

So the easy answer to the question is: if no one is interested, putting it online is not going to make it more interesting.

But more importantly, this shows an attitude which is self centered and which has not thought a second about why someone would be interested in what you have, what role it might play, how it could be made more interesting, and how digital would help.

In short storytelling has to be looked from the point of view of the person receiving the story: why should he bother? What is he going to take from this? To be blunt a little tour of the luxury scene gives you an indication that not enough seem to be asking that question… We are graced with multimillion productions that use Hollywood directors, stars and style for a result that would bring less people to a cinema than a croatian cartoon from the 70's.

The good thing is that the luxury industry has adopted content, adopted digital distribution, but the sad thing is that I would argue a lot of what goes on there is good for internal use, but not so good for the public it's intended for.

That's because the way it's done brings it head to head with large scale exhibitions and large scale films. And that's an arena that's not good to compete with, nor should it really be their objective…

There are a few exceptions though with Coco(the film)

and with the now 11 years old BMW films(and their over 100 millions views in the first year).

So how should we go about it, and after the easy criticism, what do I propose?

Well, first and foremost entering the digital world, luxury brands- in fact any brand- needs to worry about the user. The public, the people they are trying to engage. What will they get from the engagement. An obsessive question that you will find has many different answers. A few examples below. Digital you will see is one part of the equation. One part that leads to a far bigger experience.

1- Getting a large audience.

That's what you might want as a marketeer, but no one else cares. So look at it from their side. Online people are looking at finding interesting content to share. Interesting because it will make them valued by their friends or by their audience (when they have a site). And what is interesting to them? If it's 'avant première', if it gives you a glimpse of something no one else has seen before, if it's very entertaining, very entertaining (not just a film with an actress…), if it's "osé"-daring, or just incredible. They will share that content because it makes them someone in the know, someone with taste that sees or gets things before others, or just because it gives them a great conversation starter.

Some of the best brands to do this have been Armani (the tip) with 4 million views without media support

Victoria Secret (the famous live show)

and to some extent Longchamp (Kate's song).

So for more inspiration on that you need to turn to brand like Red Bull, Nike and Wilkinson.

I am yet to see something done by one of the big luxury houses that would be a serious contender here since BMW films. As much as I would have loved to have found one. I'm sure it's only a matter of time…

2- The brand story

History, kings, Maharajas, president's, but also product stories, art, know how, and of course mythical products. Yes Luxury brands have more to tell than most brands. But how many know how to tell them. We tell, you listen seems to be the norm. So few people listen.

How about looking at it inside out. Why would I want to hear the story?

because it gives me something to tell. Because people talk about the luxury products they own, because they get asked about them. Not surprising given they are made to be noticed very often. But how many brands really give us the stories to tell? Stories that take away the superfluous nature of luxury (for the price, I could have fed a family for a year) to transform products into acts of grandeur (it's the same that went to the top of the world, or it's the only thing Marylin wore at night). This gives you a very different point of view on a brand's history: what are the three things someone would say about his product? About his watch, about his car, about her bag? Brands need to decide that, need to help their public to fill the product with a soul. Because otherwise H&M will do thank you very much. That is something that a few brands like Rolex have managed to do well. Because it reinforces your superiority, emotionally. A few years back, we organized in Paris for DeBeers an exhibition called 'Love' about diamonds and Love. But we didn't just show diamonds and rings, we brought to Paris some of the world's largest and most famous stones. Around whom love stories were created, extravagant stories. So we all knew that in buying a diamond in the future, we were carrying the most powerful of messages. So that we all felt the Onassis in all of us…
Because it reassures me that I'm not being taken for a ride with an product that costs too much, but buying something that is priceless. That's why the Kelly bag is signed by the person who created it,

that's why Gucci bag makers worked in one of the shops for one day. But this is an area that has so little focus I am always amazed. Try asking the sales people about your suit, about a bag. They can make up the color (most often), but that's about it. Clearly digital can play a role there, can help you in the retail environment tell the story- sorry I should say give you the good reasons why it's worth that price. Also by the way giving you good rational arguments when you come back home and explain why you needed to add a zero to the high street price.

3- Creating a unique relationship.

Luxury products never come along. They are always accompanied by service. Because the people who buy are spoilt. Spoilt for choice, and spoilt for service.

A bad service experience drives people away. And when the sales people in Uniqlo go to the length of taking your card with two hands à la Japanese, you better do something unique and visible. In that sense luxury brands need to seize the opportunity to increase our 'privileges'. An area where digital has a huge role to play.

Here are a few examples:

Privileges around the brand story. The Vuitton guide for example. It's just like your traveling concierge. Same with the sites they built around Keith Richards, Sean Connery and other celebrities giving us insights into their cities.

Privileges with personalization. The product is not 'made in…' anymore, it becomes 'made for'

Privileges by enabling the access to previously closed moments. Like fashion shows for Victor&Rolf or Burberry's

Privileged interactions like the Twitter walls in the D&G shows,

Privileged services, like the famous concierge button for Vertu.

In most cases here digital mixes into the real world, it never lives alone. In fact I would predict that the most interaction we create between real and digital or digital and real will define the success and the depth of the relationship that will be created.

So in short I am making two cases today:

First, to move away from creating content for content's sake to creating answers to consumers needs. It sounds silly as I write it, but looking at the millions spent pointlessly, it's a sound starting point. Imagine how much better use of the money we could make… And don't get me wrong that does not mean that everything becomes very rational. It just means content needs a purpose.

Second I am a firm believer that digital is here to serve that exact same purpose, that we should break the barrier that we all mentally created between digital and real worlds.

What's the fuss about fans? Is it a fuss or a reality? What should we really focus on? Take a look at that video, then a quick recap on my previous post.

The previous post is here below:

Fans fans fans, How many fans do you have?

That's the question you'll hear in most conferences, most pitches, most presentations. For Facebook has given people what they were looking for (marketing people that is): a digital environment they understand. One that they use personally, and everyday, one their friends use, one their colleagues use, one their boss uses, one their kid uses. But more than that, it's also given them language they understand: like, fan, share. That's it. A nice change from the colleagues garbage most digital experts like to serve.

And it's also given us a metric: the number of fans. One bonuses can be indexed on, one that you can compare week to week, one that helps measure the efficiency of your work, and importantly... Compare with your competitors, and other brands.

But this all begs one question:

Are we all obsessed with the right thing?

Are Facebook fan numbers really the right thing to chase?

Am I totally mad just asking the question?

Is it Friday anyway?

Well at the risk of seeming totally mad, I'd like to say that we're all looking at the wrong thing, or saying it differently we are committing a well known sin: putting old media metrics to new digital/social media.

Why do I say that?

1- Numbers without engagement is a waste of everybody's time

Facebook is about sharing, commenting, keeping up. And that has nothing to do with number of fans. So try being obsessed with number of 'shares', and number of 'likes'. Bizarrely a metric I have seen little people track.

Am I lying? Well try this for a change: do you know what is the most shared/liked video on Facebook about your brand? DO you know what is the most shared/liked video by your 'fans'?

If the answer is no, then you should move quickly to question 2

2- Numbers without engagement is dangerous for a brand.

Because when someone has given you attention, it's always risky to ignore them. And a dead FB page, one that never responds to comments is the real life equivalent of standing in front of a customer that's asking a question and looking at him while not responding.

Better still putting material that does not get shared or liked is like talking to him about something he does not care about.

And the road from there to loosing a client is very close.

So don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should not look at numbers of fans, scale is always interesting. But today fans can be bought on Facebook. Ask the people at Facebook, they'll give you a price.

Only I firmly believe the questions need to go in that order:

what percentage of what you posted got liked, got shared?

How many likes and shares did you get?

How soon do you respond to comments, how often?

How often do you post something?

How many fans did you get from shared and liked content? How many did you buy

How any fans do you have?

And finally and importantly: what do you plan do do with them next that's going to excite them?

So if I had a little advice to give it would be to remember that social media is a place where engagement drives scale.

Pourquoi laisser le deuxième gagner:provocation politique du vendredi.

Vous vous souvenez du deuxième sur l’Everest? Non? Personne ne se souvient jamais du deuxième. Et pourtant notre monde politique tente de nous imposer une nouvelle donne: pour gagner, suffirait il maintenant d’arriver second?

Vous avez remarqué peut être comme il est impossible de se brancher sur un media Français aujourd’hui sans entendre parler du nouveau monstre: le Front National.

Il est aussi impossible de se brancher sans entendre les medias et les hommes politiques se déchainer contre des soit disant bourdes d’hommes et femmes de droite où de gauche. Martine Aubry et Claude Guéant ce matin même.

Sommes nous en bourdeland, sommes nous dans un pays devenu raciste et elitophobe? A priori oui.
Mais en cherchant un petit peu plus loin, ne faut il pas se demander comme toujours: a qui profite le crime? A priori encore au FN et au Le Pen nouveau.

Puis en homme de communication je me suis demandé la chose suivante: n’est il pas plus facile de faire gagner face au FN que face à un candidat républicain? Souvenez vous de la surprise de 2002 et des 82 % des voix de Jacques Chirac lors d’une élection où on ne donnait pas cher de sa peau.

D’une manière cynique n’est il pas ultra recommandable de faire monter le FN afin d’assurer au N°2 la place de vainqueur?
Je dis ça je dis rien comme dirait ma sœur, mais nous sommes en train d’assister finalement à un nouveau combat: celui où il suffit d’être deuxième pour gagner. Un combat qui fera finalement gagner celui où celle qui aura évité les candidatures du même bord lors du premier tout afin de récupérer un maximum de voix, où au moins d’éviter un maximum de fuites.

Nous allons donc choisir nos futurs élus dès le premier tour, changement de donne spectaculaire...

Islam, immigration, jets privés et abus de pouvoirs. Nos élus et nos medias consciemment où non se facilitent grandement la tache. Mais à quel prix? Celui d’un pays attisé de haines qui ne sont en aucun cas porteurs d’avenir. Le monde du web et sa fascination des gaffes se fait aussi volontairement porteur d’un discours politique qui ne lui profite finalement pas.

Je préfèrerai que l’on garde le FN où il le mérite: loin derrière, et qu’on mène une bataille d’idées de méthodes, et d’actions. Vous aurez remarqué que je parle d’idées et pas d’idéaux. Car les dogmes ont appris à transformer des rêves en mauvais rêves.

Allez allez laissons le podium inversé là où il a sa place: une œuvre amusante à la FIAC.

And getting worst a group called black Friday is launching a call to take her down: hitting on a 13 years old girl...

I might not like her, but I’m not sure I like the idea of sending fake naked shots either.
Well Rebecca you helped show two sides of the web I’m not really fond of...

In the meantime Rebecca Black has been in the top 10 trends on Twitter for 10 days.
The remaining question is: is she famous because she is loved, or because she is hated. Unless ist’s a little of the two in which case she is the living demonstration that we have become a little schyzo...

A ne pas rater, il ne reste qu'une semaine pour vous éblouir

Ce n’est pas moi qui le dit, c’est Telerama qui donne un TT. Oui je sais mon objectivité est quelque peu remise en question car c’est ma propre mère. Mais voici certains commentaires au sujet d’une exposition tout simplement éblouissante, une exposition que vous n’avez plus qu’une semaine pour découvrir. Jusqu’à ce Samedi 26 Mars, dans la très belle galerie Thessa Herold.
Une exposition de photogrammes. Des impressions naturelles produites à la faveur des nuits de pleine lune sur les plages de sable. Un univers magique, dans lequel on plonge sans résister. Un univers poétique à l’infini.
Mais aussi des œuvres uniques, produites; un grand bol d’air frais à l’époque où l’art devient trop souvent une marchandise reproduite à ne plus finir. Ici chaque œuvre n’est qu’une, un seul original.
